Library Cataloging and Metadata Tutoring Services – Ongoing

Need help with MARC? Having a hard time with AACR2 or RDA? Find Dublin Core confusing? I am happy to work with library school students who need a little extra help understanding cataloging standards and procedures. Tutoring sessions can be customized to suite the needs of the student. This course will introduce students to the theory, design, and implementation of databases and data modeling. Key topics include database methodologies, data modeling design, three-tier architectures, database querying, implementation of database applications, and related topics in information systems. Students will design a project that will sort through real data involving actual subjects and genuine problems by constructing a data model and building their own database. Prerequisite: CMSC201 (Data Structures)

This course provides students opportunities to learn, evaluate, and apply principles of metadata for a variety of digital resources. This course will cover metadata terminology, content and encoding schemes, applications of metadata standards for different purposes and environments, especially for digital libraries, museums, and other cultural heritage and scholarly digital repositories, as well as various approaches to metadata creation, storage, management, and dissemination, including harvesting and aggregating. Includes overviews of metadata applications including Dublin Core, Text Encoding Initiative (TEI), Metadata Object Description Schema (MODS), VRA Core, Categories for the Description of Works of Art (CDWA) and Cataloging Cultural Objects (CCO). Overview includes metadata formats; descriptive detail for different forms of material; choice and form of entry for creators; provision of authority control for creators; subject analysis, subject metadata, and thesauri. Additional topics include the Metadata Encoding and Transmission Standard (METS), metadata interoperability, metadata enhancement and OAI-PMH (Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting).
